I wrote this sometimes ago for my students group, I feel it is important that students and coach are well aligned. This is a promise I make all the horses under my care and I hope that you will join me.

As a horse under human care, you are a sentient being deserving of dignity, respect, and kindness. This charter outlines the promises we make to you.
1. Species-Appropriate Living Conditions
You will live with others of your kind—companions you genuinely enjoy, forming a stable, long-lasting herd. You will have access to forage and balanced nutrition, fresh water, shelter, and space to move, play, and run freely.
2. Health and Physical Care
Your hooves will be regularly trimmed to reflect the wear they would receive in a more natural life. You will receive appropriate dental care, routine veterinary attention, and emergency care when needed. Your physical wellbeing will be supported at every stage of life.
3. Developmentally Appropriate Training
You will not be asked to carry a rider until your growth plates are fully fused. Your training will be age-appropriate and designed to benefit you first—so you may grow up confident, safe, and unafraid in the human world. You will learn to lead, pick up your feet, stand calmly for grooming and veterinary treatment, and load for transport—all taught gently, at your own pace.
4. Training that Supports Your Individuality
Training will be shaped by your unique abilities, temperament, and desires. Our aim is not simply functionality, but to help your body and mind thrive. You will never be forced into something you are not ready for.
5. Humane Equipment and Ethical Practice
All equipment used with you or on you will be soft, well-fitted, and never used to cause pain or fear. Our work together will be grounded in consent and mutual respect. Your integrity as a sentient being will never be compromised.
6. Emotional and Mental Wellbeing
You will be seen and honoured as an emotionally intelligent being. Your need for curiosity, play, rest, and peace will be respected. You will not be subjected to boredom, chronic stress, or overwork. Your emotions will be acknowledged, not dismissed.
7. Freedom of Expression
You will be free to communicate—through movement, posture, voice, and behaviour. Your preferences and boundaries will be heard. You will never be punished for expressing discomfort, confusion, or fear.
8. A Voice in Our Partnership
You are not here to serve or prove anything. You are here to live a full life. You will be given a voice, and your choices will matter. Our time together will be based on trust and dialogue, not dominance or obedience.
9. Respect in Aging and Death
As you age, you will be allowed to slow down, retire, and be cared for as a beloved member of the family. When your time comes, you will be supported through a peaceful end—free from unnecessary suffering, and held with love.
10. A Commitment to Learn
We, your human caretakers, will remain students of your needs. We will listen to science, to tradition, and to you. We accept that caring for you well means evolving—always aiming to do better, as we learn better.
